My name is Karen Beckhart of Beckhart Interiors, The Key to Professional Home Staging and Redesign, and I am going to be your guide on this journey of setting up your home.
Now that you have found this perfect new home through Trinidad Realty, surely you are anxious to jump in and begin decorating. The question is, how do you get started? That can certainly be overwhelming. I suggest taking your time. Focus on your main living spaces. Let the house speak to you – for it surely will. Decorating it just so, helps you show off your home’s lovely features. Whether your home is a small apartment or a luxury ranch with many acres, attention is in the details.
Beckhart Interiors can help you with those details. This week, I would like to focus on three ways to decorate your walls. Using those walls as your blank canvas will help to pull your family and friends into a room to see what else is in there. Let’s focus on inviting them into that space. My favorite way to decorate walls, are with the following three groupings:
Mirrors – Reflect the beauty of your surroundings by strategically placing mirrors to show a beautiful view, open up space, and/or give an elegant touch to any room. Always stop and notice what the mirror will be reflecting once it is in place. For example, you don’t want the mirror to reflect a door – aim for a window or even artwork. Today’s trends lean toward mercury glass. This style of mirror adds a bit of interest to the space. A beveled edge adds elegance and richness. The options are endless. A wall of mirrors in different shapes and sizes can also be a fun way to dress up a wall.
Frames – Frames come in all sizes, shapes and colors. Use them all, play around with what works for the space. For instance, you can go bold with big colorful art, or do a collage of black and white family photos, nature, geometric designs, etc. Make those frames “pop” from the wall by having the wall painted in an accent color; Functional Grey from Sherwin Williams is on trend in a big way.
Shelves – Make smart use of vertical space with ledges and shelves. Placing unique elements on shelving draws attention to the walls and helps the space feel even larger than it is. Be careful not to put too many shelves. Better to begin with a few shelves and cluster them closer together. Three is always a nice number to begin with. You can always add more later. Try placing candles, clocks, and books. Leaning frames against the wall and small potted greenery, give you a few ideas you can place on these shelves.
Mark the space with painters tape and take a step back to see if you like the look. Try putting the shelves in the center and frames or mirrors on each side. Play around with the space. Remember this home is your new blank canvas.
Follow me next week through Trinidad Realty and see some more great tips from Beckhart Interiors. Remember, your new home is the stage so to speak, so make sure that you present it according to the function of that room. I will look at how to choose a sofa style and the importance of an area rug. Above all else, enjoy the process!
